Also, if you really get into the Buffy-verse it and want to get the most out of it, start watching Angel Season 1 during Buffy Season 4. There are some great cross-overs, both in terms of references as well as actual cast appearances, that make much more sense in sequence.
You are two of the coolest, people I know on the internet - and have excellent taste in TV shows and movies, but I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU ARE JUST NOW WATCHING BTVS.
Anyway, I'm actually kinda jealous. You get to live through the whole thing for the first time.
Two things to take note of:
1. The show doesn't really get off the ground until the end of Season 1 (and sorta into season 2). By the time you're in Season 3, it's a juggernaut of awesomeness that can't be stopped. You're a long way away from the mega-rad season six musical episode.
2. You know what might be weird? Angel. He leaves the show (spoiler! sorry) at the end of season 3, and goes off for his own adventures in LA. The shows didn't cross over that much - apart from a dozen characters, but there is this astounding crossover event adds an extra punch to the Buffy episode that aired that same night. Have you considered adding that show into the mix along the way?
I'm so glad they got rid of Pilot-Willow, and I'd say consider some bits of the movie as series cannon. They have a flashback in Season Two and my god, Donald Sutherland got fat!
I am a huge fan of Buffy (Angel was too "LA" for my tastes)
When you reach Season 3, the video quality is improves immensely (not sure about season two, it's been a while) and the special effects slowly improve (a few monster effects are quite rough)
Jane Espenson was one of the main writers, she now works on Battlestar Galactica.
